Open Classical Chinese Character Atlas

一 (Yī) — one

Say "ee," level and flat. The simplest character in the language, and the one this edition has had to defend against two different mysticisms eighteen centuries apart.

Locked: 一 → "the one," lowercase — and at Chapter 22, "one thing." (Never "the One," never "Oneness," never "the Absolute.")

The character, read slowly — there is nothing to read

一 is a single horizontal stroke. It is not a pictograph. Nothing is depicted, no radical is combined, no sound is borrowed. It is the mark you make when you have counted to one.

That matters more than any etymology could, because every mystical reading of 一 has to be imported from outside the graph. There is no hidden picture to appeal to. The Shuowen Jiezi (~100 CE) does import one, and grandly:

惟初太始,道立於一,造分天地,化成萬物 "At the very beginning, the Tao was established in the one; it divided and made sky and earth, transformed and completed the countless things."

Worth knowing that reading existed by the Han. Worth knowing it is Han cosmology written backward onto a tally mark.

王弼 refuses the mystical reading outright

The decisive gloss is on Chapter 22, and it is five characters:

一,少之極也 — "the one is the extreme of 少 (*shǎo — few, little)."*

Not a unity. Not a hypostasis. The floor of "few." And it is anchored in the line above it: 少則得,多則惑 — little, then gain; much, then confusion. If less is better, the least you can hold is one. 是以 (shì yǐ — therefore) does the welding, and Wang Bi is telling us the therefore is load-bearing.

河上公 keeps it just as functional: 抱,守也…聖人守一乃知萬事,故能為天下法式也 — "抱 means hold fast to… the sage holds fast to one and thereby knows the countless affairs, and so can be the world's standard." One grip that gives you the rest.

The text's own refutation of "the One"

Chapter 42 ends the argument before it starts:

道生一 — "the Tao gives birth to the one."

生 (shēng) is our locked give birth to. Whatever 一 is, it is borne. Neoplatonism's One has nothing above it — that is the entire content of the doctrine. This one has a mother. Any rendering that makes 一 ultimate contradicts a line of the book.

Why we took the mysticism out, deliberately

一 has collected two overlays, and they arrived eighteen centuries apart.

The old one is Neoplatonism — the One as the ineffable source above being, imported through the same missionary-scholar channel that gave us "the Way" for 道 and "Heaven" for 天. It capitalizes the word and turns a count into a godhead.

The new one is worse, and it is why the line could not stand as it was. "The One" is now a chosen-one trope in English — prophecy, destiny, the singular anointed figure. A modern reader meets "the sage embraces the one" and hears something being revealed to them. The Chinese is doing arithmetic.

Both overlays make 一 a status or an entity. It is neither. And the cost is not only accuracy — it is usability. "Embrace one thing" is something a reader can go and do. "Embrace the One" is an invitation to feel reverent, which is precisely the substitution this edition exists to undo. The hymn test fails on sight; the pointing test decides it. Laozi could point at one thing. Nobody can point at the One.

This is a deliberate de-mystification, recorded as such so that no future sweep mistakes it for carelessness.

The two registers, held apart honestly

一 is not doing one job in this book, and flattening it would be its own error.

The arithmetic register — 一 against 多 (duō — much).

  • Ch 22: 少則得,多則惑…聖人抱一 — the few/much/one sequence, welded by therefore. This is where "one thing" is licensed.
  • Ch 10: 載營魄抱一 — the twin phrase, 抱一 again. Rendered "embracing the one."
  • Ch 11: 三十輻共一轂 — thirty spokes share one hub. A plain numeral, and a useful reminder of what the character is when nobody is doing metaphysics with it.
  • Ch 67: 一曰慈 — "the first is compassion." Numeral again.

The cosmological register — 一 as something attained or arrived at.

  • Ch 39: 昔之得一者 — "those of old who attained the one," then the litany: sky attained it and became clear, earth attained it and became settled.
  • Ch 14: 混而為一 — "they blend and become one," of the invisible, inaudible, and intangible.
  • Ch 42: 道生一 — "the Tao gives birth to the one," the first step of a cosmogony.

"One thing" would be wrong in all three of the second group. Ch 22's rendering is therefore a licensed per-chapter exception, not a lock — recorded here so the next sweep reads it as a decision. What licenses it is that ch 22 is the only chapter where 一 sits inside an explicit few/much sequence with a therefore pointing at it.

What the two registers share

Even at ch 39, 一 is what a thing holds to in order to be itself — 天得一以清 (sky attains the one and is clear), 地得一以寧 (earth attains the one and is settled). That is not far from 河上公's 守一乃知萬事. Both registers land on staying gathered rather than scattered, which is why the deflationary reading and the contemplative one are not really rivals. 守一 (shǒu yī — guarding the one) later became a formal Daoist meditation, and concentration is exactly what "holding to one thing" describes. The mysticism was never in the idea. It was in the definite article.

The thread across the book: 一 is the answer to 多

河上公 glosses ch 22's 多則惑 as 學多者惑於所聞 — "those with much learning are confused by what they have heard." That is Chapter 81's 博者不知 ("those who have heard it all do not know"), stated fifty-nine chapters earlier by the same commentator — and his prescription is the same word in both places: 守一 here, 守一元 there.

抱一 is the cure for 博. The two ends of the book are one argument, and 一 is the hinge.

The working register

Never "the One," "Oneness," "the Absolute," or any capitalization. 道 is the only word in this translation that keeps a capital.

One risk in our own move, named

"Embraces one thing" can be misread as monomania — the sage as a person with a single fixation. 河上公 is the guard against it: 守一乃知萬事, "holds fast to one and thereby knows the countless affairs." Holding one thing is what makes the many legible; it is not a narrowing of attention but the condition for attending at all. If a reader takes the line as narrowness, the rendering has failed and should be revisited.
